Health Screening Opt-Out Pinellas County school nurses identify and assist students with health-care needs during the school day. A clinic card is sent home with each student at the beginning of every school year. Please complete this card promptly and update the information as often as needed. During this school year, students will be screened for vision, hearing, and BMI as mandated by state statute. Virtual School Accelerated Education Virtual Acceleration Virtual School Education is expanding across the state of Florida as a result of the Digital Learning Act. This legislation allows 4th and 5th grade students who demonstrate exceptional academic talent to take online accelerated middle school courses through a virtual instruction program.
If your child scored at level 4 or 5 on the FCAT in reading or math, they have the opportunity to enroll in the Florida Virtual School (FLVS) to take accelerated middle school courses.
If you are interested in finding out more about this program, please contact your school’s guidance counselor by October 21, 2011. Virtual Acceleration FAQ’s
Is Virtual Acceleration Education available to everyone? This legislation allows students in grades 4th and 5th who have scored a Level 4 or 5 on the FCAT reading or FCAT math assessment to take online middle school accelerated courses through a virtual instruction program.
Can I back out of the program if my child is not having success? Since these courses are not for credit, they may be able to withdraw anytime. That is an FLVS question about withdrawing. They may have a certain time frame. I would have the parent inquire upon registration.
Will the online middle grades course count? Yes, they do count for middle school if the student completes the course.
Can my child take more than one accelerated course? As long as they meet the criteria of a level 4 or 5 in that content area, they make take more than one course.
How do I know if this is right for my child? Students who exhibit self-discipline, a desire to learn, have basic computer skills, and have strong parental support should be able to handle a virtual setting. Daily access to a computer, high-speed Internet, email, and phone is required.
What is the cost? There is no cost for participation.
Who teaches the online courses? Classes are taught by highly qualified, certified instructors hired by FLVS.
How do I enroll? To enroll in FLVS please advise parents to visit the FLVS website http://flvs.net/Pages/default.aspx for assistance.
Can my child participate in Virtual classes during the school day? Online courses can be scheduled before, during, or after regular hours; depending on when a virtual course is scheduled, school transportation may be impacted. In these situations, parents will be responsible for transporting their students to and from school.
